The Red Fort, New Delhi

 

The Red Fort was constructed between 1638 and 1648 by Shah Jahan. It served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors for nearly 200 years.

  • The fort became the political and ceremonial center of the Mughal Empire after the capital moved from Agra to Shahjahanabad.

  • It remained the Mughal royal residence until 1857, when the British took control after the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
